Competition Winners

The WidSets Challenge judges for 2008 have now chosen 3 winners. All winning entries are unique by means of introducing something really new to WidSets.

"We want to warmly thank all you developers who did participate! Generally we were happy too see many kinds of widgets published lately including many kinds of tools and utilities, information delivery widgets, and handy mobile clients to variety of web services. Many of these and the others will still participate and have a change to be awarded in the WidSets Developer Rewards 2008 competition currently active until June 15th, with five categories being games, information, mashup, utility, and the open category. Keep on developing mobile widgets and get rewarded."

From Tero-Markus Saarimaa [tero-markus.saarimaa@nokia.com] & everyone at WidSets

blue one

Title: 4 in the row, by Lyon Laxman and Klen Copic Pucihar

Innovative utilization of new WidSets SDK features to implement the 1st multiplayer game for the platform. Demonstrates how mobile user experience can be taken towards social communities with ideas applicable in other kinds of widgets as well.

blue two

Second Prize

Title: Wburst, by Rauli Laatikainen

Very nice implementation of the casual game with superior finalisation of the implementation including puzzle editor, highscores, and several visually attractive elements. Extremely well playable and addictive gaming experience, with good quality implementation, fitting to mobile phone.

blue three

Third Prize

Title: 3D Bombus, by Will Bamford

Impressive achievement in taking the popular Bombus game to the 3D space! Game itself as noted by Will is just the first version but surely opens the new level in demonstrating what is technically possible with WidSets SDK and keeps us eagerly waiting for the more productisized release of the 3D Bombus.

The Brief

Develop an innovative mobile application using WidSets and reach a rapidly growing user base.

Description

WidSets Challenge 2008 is open to all students from all universities, polytechnics & colleges. It is initiated by Forum Nokia and hosted by Betavine . The Challenge aims to allow students to showcase ideas and working models of their applications. The objective of the Challenge is to harness creativity and build the students' passion for innovation through mobile Web 2.0 technologies. WidSets service by Nokia is a popular consumer Internet service where users can create, publish, enjoy, and share their favorite Internet content on their mobile phones. It uses mini-applications called 'widgets' to identify updates made to the user's favorite Internet sites and pushes the content to a phone as soon as it becomes available. WidSets Scripting Language ("Helium") provides powerful Java-like environment to develop both mobile internet applications and stand-alone applications e.g. games.

Get started by following the Student Competition Guidelines 2008 instructions on How to enter a Student Competition. Register as a WidSets developer at Widsets Developer, where you can find all instructions and examples needed. Publish your creation there into the widget library. When updating your application profile on the Betavine site, just enter your widget link (as an example, http://dev.widsets.com/widget/229069/) to your developer's app description, with some supporting text of what your widget is all about.

Go to the WidSets introduction for a brief description on 'Helium Development'.
