Over The Air

BarCamp Brighton 3, September 6th & 7th

BarCampBrighton http://barcampbrighton.org is a non-profit, free-to-attend, community-based web 'unconference' that is being held for the 3rd time running at the University of Sussex in Brighton. The event is being is run by Brighton's local geek community and will be a weekend of discussions, demonstrations, talks, coding and socialising where we all come together and learn from each other.

If you're a designer, developer, engineer, entrepreneur, games geek or user-experience freak (or indeed, anything else) then BarCamp is for you! This year Betavine is one of the mini sponsors, and we'll be buying everyone dinner on Saturday night. We are looking forward to meeting many of you there.

The first round of 40 tickets sold out in just 10 minutes, and the next round opens up on the 12th August at 11AM on Eventwax http://barcampbrighton.eventwax.com/brighton-barcamp-3 so make sure you're quick!

Know about other great events in the mobile space going on anywhere in the world? Then drop us a note and we will get it on the calendar to share with other Betavine members.

WWW2008 the 17th International World Wide Web Conference

Betavine was one of the Bronze Sponsors of the annual WWW Conference which took place in Beijing this year. The World Wide Web Conference is a global event bringing together key researchers, innovators, decision-makers, technologists, businesses, and standards bodies working to shape the Web. Since its inception in 1994, the WWW conference has become the annual venue for international discussions and debate on the future evolution of the Web.

The main theme of the conference was "One World, One Web". The conference explored how Web access is moving from the desktop to cell phones and TV screens, and how most users are moving from passive browsing experiences on the Internet to active participation in building Web communities.

We took part in the Personal Rich Social Media Workshop and will hopefully have some more posts for you soon.

Over The Air Widget

Last week I quickly wrote an Over the Air widget which displays the latest posts from overtheair.org. You can download it from the OverTheAirWgt application page.

It requires a phone capable of running Nokia's Web Runtime Engine. The application page has more details.

Update 02/04/08
If you don't own a Web Runtime Engine mobile then you may be able to use the Widset Widget by Mark Kramer. See his backnetwork post.

Mobile Development at Imperial College

The Betavine team recently presented at the Internet Centre at Imperial College London. You can find the slides which accompanied this event at Google Docs

The application which was used to demonstrate the Betavine API was UberPicturePoke. UberPicturePoke is a Facebook mashup which allows your friends to receive pokes on their mobile.

Feedback from CeBIT 2008

The Betavine team recently had the opportunity to demonstrate Betavine at CeBIT 2008. CeBIT (Centrum der Büro- und Informationstechnik; German for "Centre of Office and Information technology") is held annually in Hanover, Germany and is the world's largest computer expo with 5845 exhibitors and 495,000 visitors.

This 6 day event provided us with a fantastic opportunity to chat to a range of people from individual developers, founders of new companies through to executives of huge multi-national businesses.

We received some very positive feedback on the site and also lots of questions. There were 2 main things we took away from the event:

  • Quite a few people loved the Betavine concept but had never heard of it until they saw it at CeBIT. Over the next few months we plan to expand our advertising compaign to make more people across the globe aware of Betavine and the services it provides. This will include attending more developer-focused events such as the Over-the-air event in London
  • People want a clear picture of 'What happens next?' if their application proves popular with the Betavine community. Understanding exactly how we can support our developers in the longer term is something we are currently looking at and we welcome any feedback or ideas you have on this via the forums.
